My idea is to create a sound archive that will ultimately be exhibited in cassette tape and mini-disc form and presented at the end of year degree show which will be at the Truman Brewery in London.

The idea - in a bit more depth - is to create an archive of sound that, let’s say a sound designer or sound artist would collect over their years of working in the industry. Recordings such as, but not limited to: foley work, field recordings, found sounds, ambiences, compositions, speech, acoustic instruments etc. These are a few of the ideas that I have at the moment for what I’m going to record, but this list is growing constantly and I’m hoping to have a substantial collection of recordings by the the show in June.

So as I’ve mentioned all the recordings will be catergorised and presented on cassette tapes and mini-discs which will be housed in boxes on shelves on one wall of the exhibition space. Next to the shelves will be a large-backed chair in which the audience member can listen to any recordings of their choice on the provided mini-disc or cassette deck.

The idea is influenced by many things, such as the huge archive that Stanley Kubrick left behind when he passed away, which consists of a huge amount of ephemera that he collected over his prolific career as a director, the total installation work of Ilya Kabakov and Lucas Samaras, and of course the urge that all men get to collect.

Well..I’d best get started.

Oh yeah, perhaps I should mention that I’m going to record over all those cassette tapes you can see below.. They wouldn’t be very useful otherwise.

Photo

Today I received a promo copy of Field Rotation’s new...

Today I received a promo copy of Field Rotation’s new release Licht und Schatten from Fluid Radio.

What can I say? This really is a fantastic body of music full of blissful beats and wavering textures that progresses nicely through it’s 57 minutes. And with packaging that is so lovingly handmade this really is an essential purchase.

Indeterminacy. 175

A crowded bus on the point of leaving Manchester for
Stockport was found by its conductress to have one
too many standees. She therefore asked, “Who was the
last person to get on the bus?” No one said a word.
Declaring that the bus would not leave until the
extra passenger was put off, she went and fetched
the driver, who also asked, “All right, who was the
last person to get on the bus?” Again there was a
public silence. So the two went to find an
inspector. He asked, “Who was the last person to get
on the bus?” No one spoke. He then announced that
he would fetch a policeman. While the conductress,
driver, and inspector were away looking for a
policeman, a little man came up to the bus stop and
asked, “Is this the bus to Stockport?” Hearing that
it was, he got on. A few minutes later the three
returned accompanied by a policeman. He asked, “What
seems to be the trouble? Who was the last person to
get on the bus?” The little man said, “I was.” The
policeman said, “All right, get off.” All the people
on the bus burst into laughter. The conductress,
thinking they were laughing at her, burst into tears
and said she refused to make the trip to Stockport.
The inspector then arranged for another conductress
to take over. She, seeing the little man standing
at the bus stop, said, “What are you doing there?”
He said, “I’m waiting to go to Stockport.” She said,
“Well, this is the bus to Stockport. Are you getting
on or not?” (via)

The Fire Piano (1:44)

So this is a little recording of the fire-destroyed piano at Cat Hill. I wanted to just mess about with the layers of the recording and basically layered a heck load of the recordings I made and placed each one very slightly out of sync with the one before it. The little ‘glitches’ you can hear every now and then are actually the hammers falling back into their resting position. Please note that I haven’t added any artificial reverberation to this recording whatsoever, the only processing I did is time-stretching and reversal of some of the sounds.

The Burnt Piano at Cat Hill

The Burnt Piano at Cat Hill

The Burnt Piano at Cat Hill

The Burnt Piano at Cat Hill

The Burnt Piano at Cat Hill

I made a recording of this little beauty today. For a piano that’s been so fire-damaged it sounded really nice, the amount of reverberation it produces is insane.
In the midst of an art opening at a Paris gallery in 1902, Ambient music was born. Erik Satie and his cronies, after begging everyone in the gallery to ignore them, broke out into what they called Furniture Music—that is, background music—music as wallpaper, music to be purposely not listened to. The patrons of the gallery, thrilled to see musicians performing in their midst, ceased talking and politely watched, despite Satie’s frantic efforts to get them to pay no attention. We were given an open brief to create an ‘audio-walk’ for our Sound in Context lecture. This is very much a site specific piece of work, and to truly take advantage of the methods I used it’s best to experience this whilst walking around my school (which I know none of my followers can do, but I thought it would be nice to upload anyway). Starting from the Fine Art department and working your way down stairs to the basement this audio-walk will take guide you sonically. People who are used to the hallways at school should hopefully notice the familiar sounds that come with all these corridors and this should hopefully lead them to the double doors that lead them to the basement..which is where something a little strange happens. Please, please listen to this on headphones, as you won’t really get the right experience on speakers.

Phantom Channel Blog

Phantom Channel Blog:
Phantom Channel did a lovely little review of my EP Anthem today on their blog.
